The relevance of this day grows in the light of the increasing ecological catastrophes and the climate change.
The Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, preceded by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill which caused the pollution of the ocean and the destruction of the aquatic animals. Back then, the public urge of the US senator Gaylord Nelson to protect the earth was taken up by 20 million people. As for today, the Earth Day is one of the most large-scale environmental events in the world, celebrated by billions of people in 193 countries.
Georgia has joined this campaign in 1990.
To celebrate the Earth Day in different countries of the world diverse events take place: planting trees, cleaning the environment, organizing educational programs to raise the environmental consciousness. Participation of the children and the youth in this event is of the most crucial importance.
